Understanding Criminal Defence Fees Before You Instruct
Criminal defence fees depend on the allegation, court and work required. Learn how Astons Law Chambers structures fees and what should be agreed before instruction.
Why criminal fees vary
No two criminal cases require exactly the same work. The allegation, court, volume of evidence, procedural history and whether a matter proceeds to trial can all affect the fee.
Indicative ranges
Astons Law Chambers publishes indicative fee ranges for transparency. These include hourly rates, first appearance fees, written advice, single-day hearings, trial briefs and trial refreshers.
Written agreement before work begins
The specific fee and scope of work are set out in a client-care letter before instruction is accepted. VAT is identified separately where applicable.
Legal aid
Astons Law Chambers does not hold a Legal Aid Agency contract. Where legal aid applies, the practice can refer the matter to a partner solicitor firm with the appropriate contract.
